Maybe it was one of the old Westwood bears that scared him! (BTW, for the record, I'm not the Bonnie in the story - I just thought it was funny!!)

Mission Mounties corner llama on loose
By Tiffany Crawford, Vancouver Sun, March 17, 2010 9:08 PM

MISSION - Andy the llama may have a lack of criminal activity in Mission to thank for his rescue after becoming lost in the wee hours of the morning.

In a lighthearted news release Wednesday, RCMP Cpl. Raina Siou reported that because of a “slower than normal call load” on Monday night, police were able to focus on finding the animal.

They had received an anonymous call at 1 a.m. that someone had spotted a llama on the loose in a residential area.

After a concerted effort, the Mounties found Andy in the same area and lassoed him. Mission Animal Control then picked him up in a trailer.

Mission RCMP Const. Bryan Roberts said there was plenty of llama drama that morning.

“There were about three police cars chasing it. But it kept running away and the officers said it was moving at like 30 or 40 kilometres,” he said.

“Finally after a couple of hours the three cars cornered the thing so passing motorists wouldn’t smoke a llama.”

Owners Bonnie and Bill Young were happy to be reunited with him, Siou’s release said. “They explained he did this one other time when he was only six months old and a passerby picked him up in their van and returned him. He was much smaller then.”

Andy can’t wear a halter due to a skin condition, Siou’s release said.

“Bonnie advised that Andy and their other llama, Lady Ruth, a.k.a. ‘Ruthie,’ have taught them many things about llamas,” it went on. “The llamas can jump a fence when frightened for their lives; this can happen when a bear comes around the area.”

Andy did not sustain any injuries, the news release concluded, “and the Mission RCMP involved were not spit on!”
