A quick note for members having trouble posting

Steve Adams

Just this guy, ya know?
Every once in a while I get a panicky e-mail message from someone saying they can no longer post to this forum. In every instance so far --when I've heard back, at least-- it's a simple case of someone NOT being logged into the forum. You can read the forum all you like without logging in (this is, after all, how visitors view the site), but you can't post or do a number of other things without logging in.

A few things to note:
  • If your browser is set to NOT accept cookies (a situation you have to choose), you will be asked for your password constantly. It's a real pain, but not the forum software's fault.
  • When you login, you should ALSO select the check box that will "remember you." This will set a user cookie for this site and remember the fact that you've logged in. This is HUGELY convenient.
  • Finally, unless you're accessing from a public computer, DON'T LOG OUT. If you're on your own computer, you are using a cookie ("remember me"), and you remain logged in, then you can use the features of the forum to your heart's content and withOUT having to remember your login name or password.

Steve, I have also noticed that every once in a rare while, after my computer has had an update, it wil log me out for some reason.
Nothing to do with forum, just one of those damned computer things.

All of the above is true.

There is ONE OTHER thing that can cause you problems. If you use some kind of "CLEANER" to remove unwanted files (which is a good idea) such as temporary Internet files, old log files, temp files, memory dumps, etc that WILL also erase your ICSCC Forum Cookie!

I'm using CCleaner to do this computer clean up. This program allows me to 'hide' or 'set aside' cookies I DO NOT want to have removed. This plus, Steves comment about NOT logging out when you leave lets me stay logged in and active on the Forums I participate in.

Even with that, I still find somebody eats my cookie perhaps once or twice a year and I have to relog in.

Well, I'm sure that Steve Adams is correct.
And my problems are entirely self caused.
But this morning I logged in, did a post, then only minimized
that window for this forum, and did other things. Returned
and wanted to reply to someone, and again had to log
in. Then, before that post was accepted to send, I had to
log in again! And again tonight for this post.
And, grrrr, real little thing, why did I have to become lower
case lee, underline, fjellanger? Oh Well!

But meanwhile, perhaps related:

Technical difficulties at the Supreme Court

During oral arguments today in the case City of Ontario v. Quon, which
considers whether police officers had an expectation of privacy in
personal (and sexually explicit) text messages sent on pagers issued
to them by the city, the justices of the Supreme Court at times seemed
to struggle with the technology involved.

The first sign was about midway through the argument, when Chief
Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. - who is known to write out his opinions
in long hand with pen and paper instead of a computer - asked what the
difference was “between email and a pager?”

Other justices’ questions showed that they probably don’t spend a lot
of time texting and tweeting away from their iPhones either.

At one point, Justice Anthony Kennedy asked what would happen if a
text message was sent to an officer at the same time he was sending
one to someone else.

“Does it say: ‘Your call is important to us, and we will get back to
you?’” Kennedy asked.

Justice Antonin Scalia wrangled a bit with the idea of a service
provider.

“You mean (the text) doesn’t go right to me?” he asked.

Then he asked whether they can be printed out in hard copy.

“Could Quon print these spicy little conversations and send them to
his buddies?” Scalia asked.

It wasn’t just the justices who had technical difficulties. When
Justice Samual Alito asked Quon’s attorney Dieter Dammeier if officers
could delete text messages from their pagers in a way that would
prevent the city from retrieving them from the wireless carrier later,
Dammeier said that they could.

A few minutes later, Alito gave Dammeier another shot at that
question.

“Are you sure about your answer on deletion?” Alito asked.

Dammeier admitted that he didn’t know. “I couldn’t be certain,” he
said.

This is the exact behavior you'll see if you have either A) set your browser to not accept cookies, B) are using some kind of software that clears out all of your browsing data (history, cookies, temp files, etc), or C) are NOT clicking the little checkbox that will "remember you" between logins.

Once upon a time, long before I was the admin, the OLD forum software required names like that. We don't anymore and haven't in the 1 1/2 years we've been using vBulletin. If you want to change your login name to something else, that can be done.
